Hollow chocolate hearts lay sweet
Their red-wrapped secrets pressed too deep
By transitory people.
Are promises not promises if not begun by ‘I swear’
or made beneath a steeple?
Is it honorable to break things just because you can?
Or do you deceive yourself and them and hide behind half-truths
You say ‘I tried’ and then excuse because of fickle youth.
Does it damn you any less to avoid those that you wrong?
Or blame them in your selfishness as you say they should have known.
A sugar taste and bitter face,
I never meant to hurt him.
A solemn trust so misplaced.
She pushed me all along.
But there remains unbrushed aside
Memories of haunted eyes
And empty chocolate hearts
Their hollow shells can’t take the weight
Of careless, shallow people
